On this page, I've put together some Hints and Tips which you may find useful to prepare you for your trip. So have a read through before you go.
  • Take some small denomination notes with you for 'baksheesh'. Remember there are no coins.
  • When you purchase optional trips, they are quoted in English Pounds, then converted to Egyptian. If you use a credit card, expect to pay more than the original English cost because of the double conversion.
  • You may be asked for 'nubian pounds' - they don't exist, it's a con !
  • Looking for last minute gifts ? There is a fixed price shop near the berth in Luxor where everything is 'not very much' and 'Asda price'. Visit Ali's and smile nicely. We bought a few bits and pieces for friends and family and he gave a discount. Why not take him some Asda carrier bags ?
  • Take plenty of water on outings and keep topping up. A pint an hour per person !
  • If you buy drinks or water outside of the boat, check the seals.
  • Be careful where you use your credit card. You're safe on the boat, but lots of fraud elsewhere.
  • Buying gold jewellery ? Check the hallmark. Again, the jewellery sold on the boat is OK and has a guarantee honoured by Thomsons and Presidential.
  • Go in a group to the bazzarr. You will probably get a better price if more of you buy and you can share out the bartering 'experience'.
  • Take some pens and paper to give to the Egyptian children that are usually near the berths.
  • Although crime is low, don't advertise your expensive jewellery ! Use the same common sense that you would in the UK ! We didn't feel worried or threatened at any time during the trip.
  • Take plenty of films for your camera, especially high speed ones if you want to photograph inside tombs.
  • When you barter, you cannot 'offend' by offering low. The Egyptians see it as sport so start low, even though you will get tails of woe and despondency that you are trying to bankrupt him. If the price remains too high, walk away for an instant reduction !
  • Tip your coach driver when you get off, typically 1LE (20p) per person, and your boat man on the Philae and fellucca excursions.
  • If you can't face a birthday serenade, tell your representative beforehand.
  • Listen to your guide, you'll enjoy it all the more if you understand the culture and history.
  • Anything you don't want to take back such as shampoo or toiletries, can be given to your representative (Thomson's) who donates it to a local orphanage.
  • Wave to the children as you sail along the River Nile !
